News

Enhanced coverage effective 9/1/2010 Coverage under individual insurance plans will be enhanced by the implementation of key health reform provisions: 1) Effective date of coverage will be the later of 30 days after an application is received or later if requested by the customer (but no greater than 60 days from the date of application). 2) No waiting period. The 14-day waiting period for illness following the effective date of coverage will be eliminated. There will no longer be separate effective dates for injury and illness! Full benefits for injury or illness are available immediately starting on the first day of the policy. This change does not impact a) current Golden Rule customers whose health plans are already in force, b) applications received prior to September 1st, c) short term medical insurance or d) dental plans. Note that in order to receive these benefits is important for both current and new members to make an application on or after September 1, 2010. Also consider that a separate 30 day short term medical insurance application will always required when immediate coverage is required. Both applications can be made at the same time online in a matter of minutes.

4/8/2010 Payments to doctors and hospitals under United Healthcare's Medicare Advantage plan will remain frozen at the same levels for 2010 according to rules issued by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid today. Medicare Advantage currently pays doctors about 14% more than traditional Medicare so the freeze is an attempt to reduce the disparity between the two different types of Medicare. Obama has criticized the Medicare Advantage health plan as being overly generous with government money. The change is not expected to have any significant effect on Medicare Advantage members nor United Healthcare's overall operating results.

9/9/2009 Sue Schick, CEO for United Healthcare's Pennsylvania health plan, met with Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Joel Ario to discuss his efforts to expand competition in the state. He is investigating whether the state’s four Blue Cross and Blue Shield affiliates took part in any anti-competitive or unfair trade practices. United Healthcare wants to use this opportunity to expand competition with its Pennsylvania insurance products that may be more competitive choices.

6/15/2009 A.M. Best Company issued updated rating report for United Healthcare and all its subsidiaries.
