News10/28/09 - The employee benefits subsidiary of insurance giant American International Group (AIG) announced today it has chosen Careington as
the new provider of all of its dental PPO plans beginning January 1,
2010. In a press release, the company wrote "Careington International
Corporation is a licensed Discount Medical Plan Organization. Dedicated
to improving the health and well-being of individuals, Careington's
health and wellness solutions are designed to complement traditional
health insurance and provide substantial savings for under-insured
or uninsured individuals". Donna Fahey, senior vice president of
Employee Benefit Solutions is quoted as saying that Careington's
"new, larger network offers more provider locations than ever
before, delivering the comfort of choice, while reducing both client
costs and concerns.” |
The difficulties and bad feelings that can result when a dentist charges a missed appointment fee are discussed in this thread at Comlaintsboard. Neither Careington nor any other dental plan can help a consumer with this issue; it is solely a business practice decision of the dentist.
The Careington dental network was reviewed in the New York Times in an article titled "Comparison Shopping for discounted dental Care" on June 16, 2011. Unfortunately the article focused primarily on the retailer's Web site and not on the benefits of the discount network itself. Also, the author was apparently not aware that the same type of discount arrangement is already available for doctor and hospital charges through Careington's multi-plan product.

This Careington discount network is generally regarded as the largest and best-known of its type in the U.S., especially for dental services. We have never received a negative comment or complaint about the company, its services or its handling of a customer request in more than ten years as a retainer of the Careington network services through www.ehealthdiscountplan.com.
Some people may confuse a discount network service with an insurance plan. While reputable retailers and consumer protection authorities go out of their way to highlight the distinctions, there are still a few unscrupulous sellers and/or inattentive buyers of misrepresented services. Most states have adopted strict rules regarding the marketing of discount services that are designed to minimize the chance of a misunderstanding.
