Verification of insurance for college waiver
Our guest asks:
My school requires me to verify that my insurance meets
the minimum requirements set by the university. I called
the insurance company and they refuse to sign the form
that came from the school!
OnlineAdviser responds:
This is a bit confusing since health insurance company
employees are not authorized to sign a verification of
coverage form supplied by a third party.
The insurance company will, of course, provide a
verification of coverage on its own format (this can
often be downloaded from the member service Web site).
Signing a verification form is considered as offering a
public representation of the insurance in a format that
is not filed with the site insurance department;
therefore a prohibited activity for insurance company
employees. That is why you found no co-operation when
you called the member service office.
Independent benefit plan agents, plan administrators or
enrollment service representatives may complete these
verification form on request. The difference in stance
is largely a matter of legal liability. Independent
insurance firms are insured for this type of extra
service activity.
Check your policy or insurance ID card for the contact
information of the servicing agent or administrator. if
this is unavailable, Ask OnlineAdviser at

help.
