Temporary health insurance in New York

updated June 28, 2011

Our guest asks:

I’m looking for a temporary health insurance plan for myself and my family (spouse plus 2 children) for summer travel. The “Quote Intelligence” website couldn’t find any applicable plans (we live in New York City). Could you tell me if there are any available plans I could apply for?

OnlineAdviser responds:

This cannot be done while in New York state but if you travel, even temporarily, you can work it out. Use the address outside of New York as the point of application; coverage is good throughout the country. See my older article at http://www.medsave.com/health-insurance-articles/short-term-health-insurance-in-New-York.htm. Although the NY insurance information is outdated, the “workaround” still applies.

The Quote Intelligence tool finds dozens of options in most other states.
