Maximum out-of-pocket expense for international health insurance plans

October 21, 2011

Our guest asks:

I would like to know if there is annual maximum out of pocket for the following health insurance plans:

Liaison student (Plan M and N), Liaison international, and Liaison Worldwide.

And does and annual max out of pocket include the deductible?

OnlineAdviser responds:

Yes there is an annual maximum out-of-pocket amount but it varies depending on the coverage options you select.

Maximum out-of-pocket is calculated as the sum of the policy deductible (your choice as described in the brochure) plus the maximum coinsurance (typically 20% of the next $10,000) also as you elect from among the coiunsurance choices.

For example, the maximum out-of-pocket for Liaison Student, assuming use of the student health services center, is $50 deductible plus $2,000 co-insurance for a total of $2,050. Other choices of deductible or coinsurance options would obviously change the maximum out-of-pocket amount.

The other plans can be analyzed in the same manner. But since it varies depending on your choices, the maximum out-of-pocket expense risk is not published in the plan brochures or other online resources.
