I need coverage for my child living in Nebraska as required by a divorce court order. I am in Montana and my current carrier does not offer this coverage.
OnlineAdviser responds:At this time there are no Nebraska insurance companies offering "child only" insurance other than the income-restricted CHIP program. This is partly because there is no Nebraska state law requiring an open enrollment period for children. This leaves the following options that I can see:
1) Include an adult on the policy
2) Obtain a non-commercial CHIP policy. These may be limited by income, see http://www.insurekidsnow.gov/state/nebraska/index.html
3) Apply for the Nebraska pre-existing insurance plan after actually making an application for commercial insurance and being denied ; see http://www.doi.ne.gov/healthcarereform/out10202.pdf
One insurance company’s spokesperson mentioned that his experience indicates that family court orders regarding health have been recently modified for some of their members in light of the dramatic insurance changes triggered by the Affordable Care Act of 2010.
